If things are looking rough you just leave the LCD against the camera or face inwards when hurricane hunting. :doh:

I've had 4 cameras, a JVC movie camera, a Panasonic and a D5000 and D5100, with these articulating LCD's and never had any problems.

In fact I find that being able to set the screen face in against the camera protects it much better than the plastic screens.
