It would work for me but some people consider them more likely to break if they add this feature.
If things are looking rough you just leave the LCD against the camera or face inwards when hurricane hunting.
I've had 4 cameras, a JVC movie camera, a Panasonic and a D5000 and D5100, with these articulating LCD's and never had any problems.
In fact I find that being able to set the screen face in against the camera protects it much better than the plastic screens.
