The difference is that a DX lens have been adjusted so that it matches the smaller DX sensor and gives the correct field of view. If you put an FX lens on a DX body you get a 1.5x multiplication of the focal length because it is matched to a larger sensor, not the smaller DX sensor. So for example a 35-100 DX lens would give you a 'true' 35-100 view. But an FX 35-100 would give the field of view of 52-150mm. So using FX lenses you gain in telephotos reach but struggle at the wide end.
