My email "worked" fine with the upgrade. What I hated about Mavericks email and also the Yosemite version of it was the animations of screens flying in and out when you replied and viewed messages.

I removed all the animations by installing a script called NoAnimations which is a forge source script that is free and I've been using since the week that mavericks came out with no problems at all (except that you need to reinstall it with every update of the OS or mail app).

I think Robert's advice on removing pref files is a good one. If that doesn't work, I would disable and re-enable each account. If that doesn't work, delete each account and set them up again. Haven't had that kind of problem in several years but this little exercise has always worked in the past for me. It is pretty trivial if you hare using IMAP accounts.
