That is my view on all software.  If the company goes into administration or the software is retired then it should be made open source so that the assets are not wasted.

However many companies feel that doing this 'exposes their methods and intellectual property'.   Absolute rubbish especially if they have retired the software. 
Even if there is a new version then after a time the methods and code used in the software has been or should have been so improved that it would take significant rework to gain any significant commercial advantage.
