Over the years many comparisons have been made here between using a multiplier and cropping. On almost every occasion the consensus has been towards cropping.

Apart from IQ, one of the biggest advantages of cropping is the additional freedom this allows with composition.

Generally zooms don't respond well with multipliers; the dedicated 'kit' multipliers that Nikon supplies with certain non zoom lenses are of course an exception to the rule.
