No doubt the 400mm is not quite long enough for birds but the D810 means you can crop images a lot and still retain some quality. Also all Nikon DSLRs in recent times produce good high ISO results that also helps.
Not sure even my 500mm prime would be enough for birds...but would,like to try it with and 810 to see how it crops.
