I think you have to consider what type of bird photos you need. If you are trying to get a head shot of a sparrow then big investment is required. But some of the shots I prefer are 'whole bird plus some habitat'....and for that I find a 500mm on a DX is adequate for my purposes on most occasions. If I can't get the shot I want with that, I am not close enough.
