I doubt very much that the problem is from having the older versions installed. The only reason to uninstall them is "neatness" and storage space...
LR6 did require a conversion of the catalog to a new format but it nicely leaves the older catalog unchanged (for use with older versions). It took some time to convert but as I recall it finished in a couple of hours (160k images).
I generally leave the old version on my mac for about a month...just in case there is some meltdown in the new product and I need the old one to work, then I delete the old one (and in this case the old catalog).
LR6 seems to run faster and has been flawless for me...so far I haven't bothered with the face recognition and I'm quite happy with Photomatrix for HDR but should probably try LR HDR at some point.
