I think the serious birding lenses are the new long 300, 400, 500, 600mm AFS VR lenses. Personally I prefer to have the camera and lens on a tripod and use a fast shutter speed which means that VR is a waste. I sometimes wonder if AF is actually useful as I can remember the days before AF when I seemed to be able to catch focus really quickly by knowing the sport. Maybe it was youthful reflex or exuberance!
