Eric the problem is there as with bird photography you are forced even with a 700mm lens to blow up a fair bit. Also fasst moving so high shutter speeds so even in good light you need at least 800 ISO and 1/1000se or faster. If as happens the light drops just as you line up a good shot camera goes to widest f no as I work on shutter priority you then find no time to reset. Result is pull back on NEF later and if you need to plus 1.5 or even 2 stops to correct noise comes! See pix! This is 25% of a D810 image pulled back +1.5 stops in post.
