If by 'adapter' you mean a teleconverter and you are using it on your zoom lens ...you are likely to amplify minor imperfections. I found even my 80-200f2.8 was soft when adding a TC. Teleconverter really only should be used with prime lenses imho. If you look back at the eclipse combination photo I posted, you will see the eclipsed moon is unsharp compared to the full moon. Same lens mounted on tripod same aperture...the only difference was the slower shutter speed I neede to use ...due to the lower light during eclipse.
