re: easier to use a scanner
Sometimes the size/variaton and binding (photo-album) means taking a picture is easier.
I have done similar tasks, a vertical camera and a flash (pref. mains-powered with a soft box) will make life easier.
re: lens
My first choice would be any Micro Nikkor, 50 , 60 or105.

The 35-70 2.8 is Okay for me...macro is something I do with a Novoflex 400 5.6 and macro bellows...do not feel like getting bitten in my nose by some bug
