Having broken the lens mount continuity why worry about breaking the battery continuity?

I can't see Nikon missing the opportunity to make a completely new battery, maybe advanced. Rectangular cells? Cylindrical cells waste a lot of space in an rectangular housing. Having broken the lens mount continuity why worry about breaking the battery continuity?
