Have you spoken to Apple? Use their web site and they will call you. You have nothing to lose.
In my experience Apple wash their hands of any hack, (unintended modification of firmware, OS or hardware).
Their attitude is they don't want their products modifying, rather have users replace obsolete kit with new.
Trouble is the Mac Pro 3.1 - 5.1 has no direct replacement model, the 6.1 while very clever and potentially powerful, relies entirely on external storage and expansion, resulting in a rats nest of very expensive boxes and cables.
The 5.1 MacPro on the other hand can be almost as fast and pretty well self contained.
