All this talk of Scotland and the 500 route reminds me of a cycling tour 58 years ago aged 18. A pal and I took the train from the smoky black country to Carlisle and then cycled over to Ayr and continued up the west coast, across the John o Groats then down to Edinburgh and thence to Carlisle. Three weeks of rain and sunshine and sore rears. Did the circular route from Inverness round Applecross etc about 20 years ago by car. Still quiet then but have heard from a pal who goes to Applecross regularly that it has become a real attraction now like the Wild Atlantic Way in Irelands west. So glad I did them when much younger.
