 Jeff from where you are now the only improvement you will get is from buying a D500.
I could suggest that a D3S would be better but not a great deal a D4 or D5 are expensive and dont give you reach that you get from an APS-C camera.

So my simple answer is No to a D7100.
I would save for a D500.
