Unless you happen to be using a Nikon 105DC or 135DC lens when the degree of defocus and the depth of focus within the area of acceptable sharpness is a variable. In the case of a portrait where one may well want the subject's nose and eyes sharp but be prepared to have the ears slightly soft these lenses allow that to be done. Great fun but much easier with the instructions that came with the lens.
