Yes, I use an older aftermarket unit (MicNova) to get GPS directly info my NEF files.
In general any cable that connects the unit to the camera is a hassle, regardless of the brand.
Some more modern units attach to the 10-pin port directly, I have seen one and it seemed equally vulnerable.

Thanks - yes that is one of the ones I was considering - why they can't make the cable the right length and even shaped to minimise snagging, I really don't know!
