The best slate is the Coniston green which last well over 100 years, the Burlington blue is less dense, absorbs water and eventually goes soft and goes to mush. The mine method is so they can extract unweathered stone which will last longer than the surface stone, mining produces a large amount of waste but probably not as much as the open cast quarry method which requires all the overburden to be removed, which is probably safer... That creates vast waste heaps which are something of an eyesore, esp. in the Lake District with all the 'Doo Gooders' with their nimby attitude.
