I use a tripod with gimbal for my D3/D850 and 400mm f2.8 as it is too heavy to use free hand for long periods but my 300mm f2.8 I use free or on monopod.
Nikon set up in either lens pair is heavy but the 400mm and camera weighs too much for BIF shots.
