That needs to be tempered by considering the Megga large files together with the additional processing and storage costs. My iMac grinds to a standstill with the D800 files, let alone D850 files.  I still haven't revived my Mac Pro, which doesn't even blink with these very large files, the iMac is a reasonable spec 14.2 Last year I almost filled a 500Gb SSD with D800 files and I did very little photography after mid May, so at least a terabyte a year of modest photography.

To me that seems an infinitely more important consideration than what to do with my pinky.

This is also a good point, more MPX means everything else in the chain needs upgrading too.
I ended up having to update my 2012 Mac Mini with a 2018 version as it just couldn't keep up with the Z6 files (especially video ones) and ended up adding a Drobo with 16TB of storage and another couple of TB of SSD storage just to give myself a chance. Not to mention an external Vega 64 graphics card...
It's crazy how much processing power some of these files need.
