I have a 300f4 AFS and find it an excellent lens. A perfect compromise of lightweight and reasonable fstop at a decent price.

Of course, stating the obvious, having a prime lens can sometimes be restrictive if your subject comes too close.

I was photographing bears two weeks ago with the lens on a D7000 (ie 450mm equivalent). One bear came so close I couldn't get it's head in full frame. By the time I had changed to the 80-200mm it had moved further away! Grrrrrr!

I thought it was only birds that did that.

Was that last bit made by you or the Bear?
