We are still waiting for the D400.
Although Doug says I am talking rubbish, in my opinion the D300 wasn't a significant upgrade from the D200. The D400 should be.
Sometimes manufactures have to release *something* to keep their sales flowing, if significant updates are not ready for market, they tinker.
Things have changed since the film days, when a body version had a sales lifespan of several years.
We seem to be reaching a plateau in the DSLR development curve. I wonder where we go from here. You can only increase pixel counts so far and once we have ISO 128,000 and can capture black cats in dark coal cellars at f22 there isn't really any place left to go...
