So named because of the lawlessness that spread through the country as the two contenders ( and supporters) slogged it out oblivious to what was going on behind their respective backs.
For example, many upper crust landowners built their own private castles (like this) ad nauseum ….without permission from the monarch.
Rather opportune as we enter 2024, an election year in the UK ….and more political waltzing is on the cards.
