I came home one day to find that my wife had engaged a gardener who had knocked looking for work - he was about to attack my Abelia with shears as she had asked him to cut it back - I stopped him and asked if he knew what the bush was - "No" he said - then how do you know how to prune it? I asked.  Answer is one branch in 3 back hard.... he got his marching orders. Later I noticed he had pulled up the poppy seedlings and left the weeds ......
