I have found the issue with the recent topics - the "comments" facility on the images was taking ages to find any new comments, having to scan through all images and any comments. Since this facility is rarely if ever used, I have disabled the "new comments" indicator. Makes the page load MUCH faster!

The comment on an image is still there via the link under every image in the posts.
