Well the outcome is getting hold of a Nikon 80-200 f4 for the princely sum of £43 inc postage from Japan....
Advertised as having some fungus / haze but I am used to cleaning out these early lenses following Richard Haw's excellent repair guides.
A simple removal of the rear group and clean with a lens wipe saw 90% of the problem disappear - I'll pull the front group out later to finish the clean up.

That is a pukka Nikon lens. I used to have one before I swapped it for the AF version.
Fine lens, good luck with the clean and you will have a fine item.
I know who to send my lens to for a clean.
