 And that is why they have had a different battery system for every group of cameras going back to the FE?

I don't think so... More likely continuous product 'improvement' this time happily justified by legislation.

It also provides another hurdle for the pattern battery makers to clamber over, keep costs up and prevent users from carrying their perfectly good legacy batteries (also chargers and power supplies) forward to their new cameras.

What can we do about it? Not a lot, pay up and smile. o.O

Perhaps join Steve of Oxford in his battery factory?
