Interesting that you had a similar experience with the D300.

It wasnt an IQ thing exactly nor handling but I never seemed to be able to get the hi ISO performance I wanted (only 1 stop difference but 1600 compared to 3200ISO) from the D300 compared to the D700 so I was always compromising.

In sunny conditions no problem!
