Sorry Ed, JK got there first. I would say don't move too much at once. Don't be tempted to simply lift all the data from the external and dump it on the internal. That can cause the sort of lockup you describe. I tend to move folders of not much more than a Gig at a time when I am moving large dollops of data. Powering down and re-starting usually sort's any glitches. If you go to the finder pref's you can turn on the icon for the main hard drive. I have no idea why Apple turn this off by default, it's one of my most used features to access my data.
