Well, I missed most of this post.
I cannot imagine life without my DSLRs. main reason would be the use of telephoto lenses. Putting a long lens on a rangefinder camera pretty much defeats the purpose of lightweight portable shooting.
On the other hand, I can't imagine ever taking DSLR on a plane trip again.

After retirement, the only plane rides I take are for vacations and I always take the DSLR kit. I want to be able to capture every aspect of my vacation with the best equipment I own because I will probably never return to that location. I agree it's a PITA to travel these days and carrying a DSLR kit makes it more so, but I'm not sure I could bring myself to leave the DSLR at home. Having my wife carry the equipment helps.
