"If you intend to take photographs inside, there is a £3 license you must buy"
The 'license' stipulates you cannot use or distribute the photograph...ie only viewed on your computer. If you want to use or transfer the photos in any other way, you have to 'apply' to the dean and chapter for a commercial license...price unknown.
OH and by the way ....wife with camcorder and me with camera = 2x £3
OH and by the way ....guide book £3
Needless to say my Yorkshire dander was roused. OK I dont go into large churches very often but if they want to effectively charge an entrance fee...then do it for everyone....not just photographers. Its not the charge, which is modest, it is the selective targeting I dont like.
I dont mind paying for a guide book ...wouldnt even object to a unilateral entrance fee (I often give a donation anyway).
But singling out the taking of photographs is another matter...and double charging us...despite me insisting the photos would be on the same PC.
Sharp contrast to other European countries!
I was hoping to visit Ely Cathedral ...better check if THEY single out photographers!

I suppose on reflection, there is some logic to it.
Many photographers wont bother with a guide book. So at least there is a chance of getting something from them. We invariably buy a guide book because to get some photos, controlled lighting and private access are needed, which are not possible on a public visit.
I invariably put something in the church box as I leave...if the visit was enjoyable. I just like to be in control of that action, not be confronted by a charge irrespective of the experience inside. But I guess others may be different.
Perhaps I still have the Christmas grump?
