To my mind the D600 is more similar to the D7000, D90 etc

If we ignore sensor size and resolution only the D800 compares favourably to the D300S and D700

When I worked in retail I handled insurance replacements where equal or better was often specified
At the moment, were the D300S to be discontinued, the D800 is the correct replacement for a D300S for the reasons outlined by Gilbert

We have to think of the D600 as full frame consumer/entry level enthusiast while the D800 is the Full Frame Prosumer/Entry Level Pro

The D7100 is the DX consumer/entry level enthusiast with the D300S still acting as DX Prosumer/Entry Level Pro (just shows how far ahead of it's time that camera was)

I can't believe Nikon wouldn't continue to make cameras for this segment
