Good luck, Robert - lucky to have Rich here to help.
That crazy LR file import/export goofiness has caused me to delete the app forever... Just plain over designed and nutz if you ask me...same for iPhoto and Aperture...and for that matter, Capture One.
All of these apps were created long after Photoshop. How did they all wind up with this confusing file system? And why???
I don't have a problem with import Tom, I have it set to leave the images in their original folders and to render 'standard' previews. I would never allow Lr to ingest the actual files.
What I HATE about Lr is the export procedure. I almost never do a batch export, the complexity of the export dialogue is ridiculous and way OTT. All I want is 'Save As' just like Photoshop.
I like the keywording and organisation that Lr brings to the job so I stick with it.
My answer to the export stupidity is a terrible fluff, simple and quick and foolproof. With the image I want to 'export' on screen I press 'Shift+Command+4' That gives ma a hairline cursor, I select the portion of the image I want and it appears on the desktop, I name it and use it. Done!
For reasons I don't agree with, 'Shift+Command+4' normally produces a TIFF, I want JPEGS from my screenshots so I use this handy little utility to change that default from TIFF to JPEG.

This free utility allows many OSX default settings to be altered. I use it a lot, it's very handy to make the computer do what I want, the way I want it done.
