In my view provided the key elements are not altered in a way which changes the sense or truth of the image, doesn't mislead or misrepresent the scene, then enhancement or editing of the image is OK.
For artistic results then anything goes, especially if the client asks for it.
Perhaps the people who complain about this sort of stuff have too much time on their hands?
