Sorry JK I meant to reply to this...

The native RAW processing on Macs is part of the OS. Aperture and iPhoto share the engine which is built into the OS and available for any other software to access. Has been like this since Aperture was released I think, maybe even prior to that since the advent of OSX when iPhoto started, but I didn't have digital back then.

This is one of the things you get when upgrading the Mac OS, updates and refinements to the RAW processing data. It's frequently mentioned in the release notes that support has been added for X, Y, Z cameras. Even updates for legacy OS's contain these additions and revisions for RAW processing within the Apple OS.

Adobe as far as I know is entirely separate, using their own engine and codec.

Mac users who are hunting for RAW processing for specific new cameras may find an early version of the RAW de-coding in iPhoto which is of course free with every Mac.

I am not entirely convince of the quality of the Apple RAW processing, I suspect it will be adequate at best, which is one reason I am a bit wary of the software which uses it.

I understand the incentive to find alternatives to Adobe but given Lightroom and Photoshop Elements use the same RAW process as Photoshop it is entirely possible to access the Adobe RAW processing engine with out having to mortgage the house.
