For anything critical I take a series of exposures of grass and check the histo for good exposure, then check the histo every exposure during the session. I have used a Nikkor Micro 55 manual lens on a D3100 with good results using that method. If I am bracketing the exposure with other cameras, almost without exception I find that the 'correct' exposure and minus 1/3 stop seems to give the closest to the desired results. I still check the histo for confirmation.
