A, You are right. The camera's like the D5100 have no coupling with non-CPU lenses, so the camera has no way of knowing that f-stop is set on the lens. On the other hand, in full manual mode some old lenses can be mounted on a D3nnn/D5nnn that cannot be mounted on some other DSLR Nikon camera's. A work-around would be: mount a CPU lens (like some AF-S kit lenses) and do an exposure reading in manual mode, then mount your non-CPU lens (and check the exposure on the histogram).
