If I want longer I use the 80-200 f2.8.

I use the 18-105 VR a lot for general photography on my D3100 and D200 and I am very happy with it's performance and handling. See the Westonbirt arboretum images... 18 is wide enough for most things and 105mm is a handy length on DX without being too long. If I want longer I use the 80-200 f2.8.
