The magnification will be the same as on your 70-300 but the lens is NOT the same quality. You get what you pay for from Nikon. A £200 AFS VR lens will not be as good as a £500 lens that is from the professional range where it has AFS VRii and better glass. If you want a KenRockwell comparison then see here for the 55-300 DX. http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/55-300mm.htm And this is the review of the 70-300 FX lens. http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/70-300-vr.htm
This is the conclusion from the 55-300 review.
Overall The Nikon 55-300mm VR DX is a perfectly competent, light-weight, wide-range telephoto for DX cameras. It's better than the smaller and lighter 55-200mm VR, with which this 55-300mm VR has much in common. The 70-300mm VR is a much bigger, better and not that much more expensive FX lens.
