As I mentioned in another thread, I visited my friend in Barrow who eBays Nikon cameras this afternoon.

What a lovely afternoon, we had a good chat and his wife had prepared a great spread of nibbles and seasonal treats.

Then we went into his den leaving the boys playing on the games console...

I have handled a really clean D100, several D200's, a D300 which is in nice condition, a very clean D700, a couple of D3's and looked at various film cameras like F6's.

He has a clean but faulty 28-70 f2.8 AFS lens which apparently hunts uncontrollably in AF mode. Works perfectly in Manual, tempting... I seem to remember Eric mentioning it's a very good lens for IR? I could live with MF for that.

He also showed me a current pride and joy, a Nikon spotting scope, 82mm?, like the one Graham mentioned recently complete with a 60, 40, 20? zoom eyepiece AND a camera mount. Absolutely superb optics, beautiful to handle. Perfect for anyone interested in birding, I would say.

As for 80-200 AFS zooms he has 3, or 4? two as new, mint condition. Just fondling these was a real pleasure.

Sadly he doesn't have any manual lenses at present, nor any EL lenses.

I did come away with a nice present:

We all had a wonderful time and stuffed with food.

Robert....your memory of my 28-70 assessment is better than mine.

I don't remember testing it. That's not saying I didn't ....can't recall it.

I do recall the 24-70 is absolutely awful for IR. Suspect using the coffee cup would be a definite improvement.

Maybe its overshadowed my 28-70 recollections?
o.O
