Hmmmm. Nice lens! How do you find it? I have the Nikon 400mm f2.8 AFS which I use with a Kenko DG300Pro x2 converter but I need to have it on a tripod with the Wimberley head to get it to work nicely. The total set up with camera, lens, head and tripod weighs 10kg so it is not for long walks. I notice that your EV compensation is 0.0 and that you are using Aperture Priority, Matrix metering. I guess you need to boost shadows (+2 stops) to get detail in the underside of the wings. Is this correct?
