With the current interest in lighter equipment I thought I would appropriately refresh my avatar. The wife snapped me while I was looking for inspiration...or rather praying for better lighting with the XT.

I hope I am allowed to show a Fuji on this forum? The contrast between Jonathan's and Robert's heavy weight renditions, amused me.

Just wait until I get my XT2 then I will put the Fuji XT2 and 100-400 side by side with the D500 with 200-500 and D3S with 400 f2.8. I might include the X100T as a comparator.
I will have to take the picture with my XT1 and 18-55.

my avatar is about 10 years old, so I should do the same...I'll get around to it, I'm sure :-)

In best tradition I have copied Eric and changed my avatar, but no camera in shot for me. Nobody takes my photo on pain of death so it's hard to find anything I'm in.

I may have to change my avatar again, as the Fuji romance is coming to an end!!

Great lenses, acceptable performance on static subjects but useless on any quick response situations.

Have now edited out the offending Fuji....which on reflection makes a nonsense of this thread.

Or NOT....for some reason my Avatar won't change anymore.

I am stuck with a Fuji....Merd!o.O

Your Fujiless hope it wasn't painful.

Even your IR stuff?

My XT2 is very good, as good as my D500 - No, but as good as my D3 or D300. I need to test on a flamenco shoot then I have to make a serious decision about Nikon and Fuji or just Fuji.

Eric-

You really NEED an xp2 and x100T.

Just trust me on this and all will be good again :-) :-) :-)

tom

Do you still use your Nikon gear, Tom?

I assume that you are suggesting the hybrid viewfinder...using its optical mode...would resolve my biggest critique of the EVF refresh rate? I can understand that, but I did buy the XT1 as I felt it was better in the hand than the XP1 which had a very small grip (XP2 wasn't available at that time so don't know if it has any better grip)

The XP2 is a tempting thought. It would save a lot of Fuji selling. I may take a trip to the local camera place and try one out before hitting the sell button.

Problem is I seem to be increasing my Fuji equipment list while trying to decide whether to sell it!! The Nikon gear must be laughing in the bag.

Go to WEX and try the XT2.
Much better refresh rate on the EVF.
I still need to test on my Flamenco Dance shoots. Hopefully I will do this on Saturday/Sunday.

Don't think that works for Gentiles...let alone atheists.

;-)

There you are...I've stopped looking for inspiration.

I think any length of time thT the viewfinder freezes is a lost opportunity.

It's a great system for getting the first shot and equally accomplished at missing the second shot.

Reminds me of the saying....

'The early bird catches the worm...but the second mouse gets the cheese'.

The mouse might be cheese-less!!!

I've been reading Ken Rockwells review of the XT2...yes I know we love to hate him, but he does know cameras.

He is full of glowing praise for the new Fuji. He waxes lyrical about Fujis commitment to serious development and says the XT2 outperforms even his digital Leicas. He had me pumped with the obvious improvements over my XT1 and I was almost considering getting one.

Then in one sentence he woke me up.....

"The X-T2 doesn't replace a DSLR for sports and action, it's too slow and clunky by comparison. Mirrorless is inferior to DSLRs for AF speed."

I am not sure the critique of AF speed, persay, is correct, because it's not the speed the lens locks on that's the millstone...it's the black viewfinder between shots.

Well that may be OK for still subjects, but in the time it takes for that image to clear, a moving subject has moved on.

Small's bird have left the frame of view, a persons expression has changed ....any fleeting change is missed. There is little chance of a fast follow up shot.

The time to acquire focus at the outset, is quite fast. But the time to REfind the moved subject and REfocus, when added to the blackout time itself, is huge. This is especially true when the subject is in a difficult background.

For example, I was shooting Vultures circling in the sky above me a few weeks ago. ( I told the wife to lay down and play dead but she told me something else!!! ) Anyway...I focus on a bird, take a shot...great. But the screen is blocked with the captured image while the bird flies out of the viewfinder. I then have to hunt around the blue skies for it, fighting the AF which wants to focus on Jupiter! Or I have to zoom out to get a wider view to find the critter.

This may have been my lack of experience and technique (yes I have heard of manual focus) but I am convinced it was a lot easier shooting and retaining the framing with an optical viewfinder.

So despite the advances and so called improvements in performance, I cannot see the XT2 replacing my XT1.

I WILL check out the XPro2, as per Toms recommendation, as its hybrid viewfinder in optical mode may counter this problem.

But I have to say that my wish for a single camera that will cover all requirements is not being met by Fuji .....perhaps that was a foolish expectation?

On the other hand ....with the exception of the extra weight/bulk one has to wonder if a D500 might do a better job of this multipurpose role?

Underwhelmed by Ken as I am never sure if he has actually had hands on or if he is regurgitating part of another review.

I still need to test the XT2 for my flamenco shooting.
I tested it last night when doing a theatre shoot of a play. It performed pretty well but there were occasions when the image in the EVF looked a bit fuzzy (very low light).

I need to do my final checks for my flamenco dance stuff. Hopefully in the next two weeks.

To return to the avatar theme, i just realised my avatar was still wearing a Santa hat from last xmas! So, I've changed it to something less festive and more Halloween (before I have to change it back to the Santa hat...) :wine:

Edit - that's weird.  When I look in my profile the new avatar is there but it's still showing the old one on the forum.  JK???

Seems a quirk of the software, Judith. I had the same problem changing mine ...has to log out and log back in later to see my new avatar.

PS ...you are at your silvery best on my screen. ;-)

Whether it's Ken's own words or another's, it echoed my concerns about the limitations of an EVF. I would be interested to hear of anyone is seriously using the XT for sports and wildlife.

As it stands I don't see the XT2 being enough of an upgrade for me to be tempted....but will be interested to see if the 'blackout' time is reduced.

I've decided to hold off selling or adding any more photographic equipment till I have had time to get some wildlife shooting done under more controlled conditions.

Refresh your browser!

They are too clever, they store images which they know (?) will be needed next time.
