I posted this on the old server today.
===============================================
Well today 17th May I have locked down all the threads and am busy downloading the backups provided by the server admin.

So this my 26000th post is my last on this forum.

Thanks to Armand for his kind help and provision of this server and hosting for the last ten years or more.

I now go to switch off the lights and close the door.

================================================

The old server should still be visible but not available for posting.

A sad day for me after having used that server for so many years (over a decade).

But life continues and improves over here on the new forum.

Please can everyone go and update their Account Details/Profile and use the droplist that shows you have read and accepted the rules.

Also if you can please put in a rough geographic location (country (minimum) and if possible nearest city or town).  We ask this so we can provide better help for you if you are having problems as some solutions are country or supplier specific.

Thank you JK, 26,000 posts, well done!

Have downloaded the old server backups, archived and now hope to be able to extract some of the more interesting ones to insert into this forum as read only.

:popcorn:

Thanks Robert.

I'm still downloading as I had a download failure last night for the web part (~3GB).

:needsahug:

Fortunately I wasn't at home so I had a good connection! Over 5 Gb of wisdom, chatter and OT conversation.

OK all downloaded and without checking every single post it all seems to be there. I dont think we really need the old stuff as if it is reference documents and manuals then I have a huge store of all/most of the digital camera manuals and lenses from 1998.

The valuable stuff are the lens comparisons and reports from real use. Robert is dealing with these and will be posting to the Lenses thread.

Have you extracted the 2006 to 2012 posts JK? I can't extract them so far, I lack the software and expertise.

All I need is a text dump by section. I will work my way through the text myself.

I have all the 2000 to 2006 posts and I am working my way through them.

No I sent you a link regarding the how to get the data into FileMakerPro.
I was going to leave it all to you :lol:
If you need help then shout.

HELP!:lol:

I read the thread you sent. Some (or most) of the terminology left me bewildered.

Perhaps the biggest obstacle I saw was the need to create a structure to import the data to.

I understand how to do that, I have done it many times in the dim and distant past, what I can't figure is what structure would be needed for the forum database. I still think it needs a Linux or DOS based software, even Unix to access the text files and extract the parts we need. Once I have the text, comma or tab delimited then it easy peasy. What is beyond me is extracting the text.

I am sure it's dead easy, once you have a procedure and the requisite software (and Saturn aligns with Mars!).

Sent email to Armand requesting him to get the server admin to provide a database dump in text delimited format.

That would be perfect!

It shouldn't be an issue to them, they deal with this sort of thing daily.

Thanks JK
