just to let you know i,m still around lads ,although still shooting canon  i have just treated myself to a new lens the sigma 150-600mm sport ,what a real beast this is and totally unlike anything from the canon or nikon stable ,as well as being fully weather sealed its super sharp and via a little add on a USB dock you can fully program the lens to do exactly what you want  its arrived by blackfox wildlife and nature imaging, on Flickr

| I´ve had a shot of that Sigma - was very impressed. It´s really sharp and can be hand held easily enough.

| Nice images. Which camera are you using these days? Looks suspiciously like a Canon. No problem with that just the controls dont suit me.

| That's a 1dmk3 its a 1.3 crop sensor only 10 MP but turns out a good image ,I also have a 70d but prefer the other one . The other beauty of that lens is that if at any time in the future I do decide to return to the nikon fold then sigma wiill (for a charge) change the mount ,so you don't lose your favourite lens by switching camera brands

| not done that much for a week or so due to bad weather ,but it did give me time to quietly sit back and analyze what i had been taking and to appraise various aspects ,first off i found that atmospherics played a large part in distortion at full range with the 70d especially over reflective surfaces i.e still water ,roads ,grass lands etc ,possibly due to the finer sensor to . with the 1D3 and its older 10mp sensor i was noticing that close shots were superb but over distance and with cropping detail was being lost even when stopped down . i threw these things around in my head for a week and came to the conclusion that the lens needed more fine tuning ,not just along the lines of M/A but the lens itself ,so yesterday i put in with the USB dock some new settings enabling different focal lengths of focus ,a finer degree of focus on the chosen point/s ,and a what sigma refer to as dynamic image stabiliser ,took it out today and to be honest the results were really good and although i might try tweaking more its definitely helped .the next one to test will be the 20mp 70d .  I think that the Tamron Adaptall system was great but I guess with modern AF this wont work well as AF tolerances are pretty small. Hence the need for micro-adjustment feature even in factory made lenses.

| BF Your air pix of birds are spot on I wish I could do that! Just been photographing Godwits in E Anglia with my new Nikon 80-400 lens on ground spot on but keep missing focus when they are in air. The D810 locks on very fast but in air I just keep missing the focusing hot spot. Any tips would be super help please?

| things have actually moved on quiet a bit since my last post ,forgot about this TBH ,although i was getting decent enough shots with the lens i wasn't entirely happy with the end result pictures that much . so i actually sat down a few weeks back and went through loads over a couple of days trying to see what was wrong ,then i took the plunge and decided to fine tune it with the sigma USB DOCK well what a difference it was like someone had stuck a ferrari engine in a mini . there are various settings you can change one governs the way the o.s works /reacts and i have now set mine to DYNAMIC this helps to keep the focus point steady on the eye whilst hand holding and actually works ,the next thing i altered was the lens A/F and i changed this from fast focus to MAIN FOCUS POINT PRIORITY the two changes combined have turned this from a extremely good lens into a superior one a sample since changing is underneath  hard-nut ! by blackfox wildlife and nature imaging, on Flickrand another faster moving one  na ,na,na na by blackfox wildlife and nature imaging, on Flickr

The D810 locks on very fast but in air I just keep missing the focusing hot spot. don't really know what to suggest graham ,if the bird is fairly slow then single point a/f should be o.k if a fast erratic flyer then multi point .the only REAL answer is practise till perfect then practise again .make sure all your settings are configured for b.i.f as well . i find going to somewhere where seagulls gather is good practise a few slices of bread will provide a hour or mores target practice ,even better if you have someone throw the bread out for you
