I used to use Sigma and Tamron lenses in the days before AF came to all cameras and they were a reasonably good buy as they were close to Nikon quality.
AF has changed the landscape a bit as there were compatibility issues especially with Nikon, and possibly more so with Nikon now moving from F mount to Z mount.  I hd a Sigma 50-500 that was very good but I sold it to get my Nikon 400mm f2.8 AFS, now also sold.   The electronics patents are held by Nikon and so anything is a reverse engineered result.

That said, I believe that the 150-600 lenses from both Sigma and Tamron are excellent optically.  The equivalent Nikon offerings are wallet burning affairs!
The bird watchers here Iain, Jeff (Blackfox) will be able to give you feedback as well.

Thanks JK. It's a minefield - buying something you haven't seen on the basis of a no-hassle return policy- pull the other one.........

Yes it is a minefield, especially if you cannot have a hands on before purchase.
Have you tried Clifton Cameras in Cheltenham?  They have given me good service when I have purchased from them.

I have always found Sigma customer service to be very helpful but I don't care for the rubbery surface finish on their lenses which goes tacky over time
