Can anyone tell me why Nikon (other makes also) are making 1.8 glass all of a sudden. What am I missing? Ralph

As far as I know f1.8 seems to be one that Nikon like as they have made 50mm and 85 mm lens with f1.8 as maximum aperture. I dont know why that value rather than f2

And the new 50 f1.8 AF-S is tempting, and attractively priced locally

The old 50mm f1.8 was a good old lens so it will take some beating.

Personally, I love the 1.8 series. I have a old 50mm D and 35mm G and love them both. It's great being able to shoot fast in low light. Great optics for not that much cash. Win-win for me.

I suspect the reason for the appearance of more f1.8 lenses from Nikon is that they have finally settled on the FX format and want to capitalise on all those enthusiasts who want to use prime lenses. They have had a number of f1.4 primes for some time now but they are rather expensive. The f1.8 versions are significantly cheaper but retain a very high performance. I still have my 85 f1.8 AF that I bought about 20 years ago.
