As some of you who read the forum frequently know, I intern at a US University in the athletic communications dept. Basically I write press releases, shoot & edit video and so on. I've shot some stuff for them on the side to show them what I can do.

One thing I've noticed is our usual contract photographer (in my honest opinion) isn't very good. His sports shots are good enough, but his stuff of people at our events and team photos aren't particularly good. In fact, I think they're quite bad. He is a pro and has all the necessary equipment (D3s, 70-200 2.8, etc.) but it almost seems like he doesn't *really* know what he is doing.

Below is a gallery of an event we hosted earlier tonight that he shot. Basically I'm just wondering if I'm the only one who sees this and is just mildly jealous that he gets to do this for a living, or if there is some truth to my analysis.

Well as I'm on the road and browsing on an iPad for the next few days the whole site fails at the first hurdle because it's Flash based.

Come on people - catch up!

Yes HTML5 is the way.
I was reading an article on it this morning on the BBC website.

Regarding the pictures in the gallery.
I'd say that these event pictures tend to be fairly samey and it is difficult to inject some life and difference into them.

If you feel that you could contribute why dont you go along as well and take some additional photos and see how they compare.  You dont have to shoot the same scenes but some more candid ones.

I do think that the initial few shots of the speakers at the rostrum could be improved.

Tom

Care to translate that for those on the other side of the pond? Is that good or bad?

I think it means you put the subject in the centre and press the shutter. Bang, subject in center of photo, focus will probably be good but very boring compositionally. A weakness I also fall into quite a bit.

Won't be able to look at the photos till I get home on Sunday - still on the iPad.
