It just ocurred to me I haven't been here in ages so hello and happy new year to you all. Here's a squirrel just to prove I still take photos LOL. Snapped on the P900, I got last August as my new holiday camera, about a month or so ago. I'm really pleased with it. In good light, the pics are excellent and it peforms pretty well in not so good light as well. This was ISO800, 1/160, F6.3. Attachment: DSCN2830a-web.jpg (Downloaded 24 times) |

A Squirrel thread! Welcome back Judith, have been wondering where you were. The place seems brighter when you are around, Lovely Squirrel. JK's back in Blighty, God knows what's happening in Westminster! I will be up near the Kyle of Lochalsh in May for a week or so with some friends. I want to take a trip around the North coast of Scotland this year, East to West, maybe during the summer. One or two tips where to visit for relaxed landscape/nature photography would be appreciated. I believe the North West tip is spectacular and perhaps a little less over run with visitors than Skye? Any particular Glens or Lochs? |

Robert wrote:A Squirrel thread! Watch out for the motor homes and caravans! The Route 500 has been promoted so much over the last couple of years in camping mags and programmes such that it's become a bit of a nightmare. Not just UK campers but loads of those foreign johnnies driving the route and driving the locals mad with traffic, wild camping in lay-bys, rubbish and worse. By all accounts it's turned the once peaceful scenic route into a holiday pestilence....rather like the Lakes. |

Yes I was thinking that the North Coast 500 looks like a good possibility this summer with all this Brexit stupidness. My camper is at this moment in tthe process of being converted to UK plates with all its attendant bureaucracy. |

Oh. That's blown that idea then. It's something I have always wanted to do, maybe middle of February, or wait until November? What's the "500" bit? I thought the A500 went through Staffordshire... |

Well, shamefully, I have to admit my knowledge of Scottish glens and lochs is abysmal. The North 500 would have been a nice drive at one point but As Eric says, it's a victim of its own success. You'd be better waiting for a nice weather window off season to try that one. I would highly recommend a trip to Orkney. I did that last summer. Is beautiful with loads of interesting stuff to see. You drive up to john o Groats and get the wee ferry over. I did it as an organised bus trip from Inverness which was good but a packed day. Bit more calm to go over for a few days but book well in advance to get accommodation and check the cruise ship timetables as you prob don't want to be there when every site is packed with cruisers. I've enjoyed a few drives around Loch Ness. Plenty of stuff to stop at on the way round and great views from the highest point. Best person to ask for locations is Jan on this forum (highlander). |

I discovered there was a RSPB hide abut 20 miles from where I live and there are loads of squirrels around there. I was out in -1 degrees that day, wearing 50 layers of clothes, hugging my flask of tea! And being in the hide didn't Improve the temperature any. |

Thanks for that Judith, Loch Ness isn't too far, sounds a good idea, will look into that. I will also look into going over to Orkney. The train ride to Malaig is wonderful, have done that, highly recommended. Jan seems to have taken leave of absence recently, perhaps I should give her a nudge, I think I have the url of her blog somewhere, in fact it should be in some of the most recent posts she made. The waterfalls of Glen Etieve and Glen Orchy are well worth visiting, both deserve a full day each. Nice to see you back. Check out the thread on upgrading the forum if you have time. |

I wont be venturing North for a while. You know I prefer the sun to the snow. More likely to be June or later. I also need to go back to Spain sometime after Brexit/April to get everything in order. |

All this talk of Scotland and the 500 route reminds me of a cycling tour 58 years ago aged 18. A pal and I took the train from the smoky black country to Carlisle and then cycled over to Ayr and continued up the west coast, across the John o Groats then down to Edinburgh and thence to Carlisle. Three weeks of rain and sunshine and sore rears. Did the circular route from Inverness round Applecross etc about 20 years ago by car. Still quiet then but have heard from a pal who goes to Applecross regularly that it has become a real attraction now like the Wild Atlantic Way in Irelands west. So glad I did them when much younger. |

Here's an article outlining the problems of the north 500. It was a bit of a daft idea really considering so much of it is single track and B roads that were never designed for heavy traffic. There's now a big litter problem as well as people are too bloody lazy to take it home with them. Who do they think is going to pick up all the stuff chucked out of car windows?! https://www.northern-times.co.uk/News/Is-this-the-highway-to-hell-or-a-road-paved-with-gold-16062016.htm |

Hmmm, sad. I was looking forward to that. I went to Skye last year, that was silly busy, the Fairy Pools path was absolutely chocker. Both car parks were full, cars parked for a mile along the road either side of the path to the river Brittle. Campsites were full. It seems mid week, out of season will be the only way. As for setting speed records, it took me 7½ hours to drive out of Glen Etive (~16 miles?), mainly due to stopping to take photographs and to enjoy the scenery, the North West route would probably take days, a week even! |

Robert wrote:Hmmm, sad. I think the problem is widespread these days. Since getting back out birdwatching I've noticed a huge increase in people. Went to Titchwell RSPB on a Monday morning at 9:30 ...there were 35cars already in the carpark. . admittedly it was the first sunny day for a couple of weeks so...surprise surprise, everyone else consulted the weather forecast like me. But it's not just the birding areas. We went to Alsace in September and couldn't move for coach trips. Huge traffic increase compared to our last visit in 2011. In fact, we noticed a significant increase in traffic all over France....normally so quiet and traffic free. I too remember trudging northern wilderness areas in the 70's. We even bought a caravan to get nearer to the wildlife, than the hotel, b&b and cottages we had used. Had some wonderful undisturbed times. The sad fact is there are now more and more of us grey wrinklies, with time on their hands and cash in their pocket, looking for ways to spend both. As someone said to me recently, “the quiet time has goneâ€. |

It's still pretty quiet where I am Eric but they've dreamed up the NE250 now which passes through my town. At least that's on main roads though. Our local rspb hide is nice and quiet as well. It's off the beaten track. |

The whole NE coast in Scotland is pretty spectacular with wonderful yellow/white sandy beaches, dolphins, porpoises, occasional whale not tomention the Speyside and other single malt distilleries. People are friendly and pubs are open many hours. That was a few years ago but whilst there may be more people now it wont be as crowded as the SE of England. |
