I keep logging onto the forum and am met by silence. Maybe we should change the name to the "Geriatric Nikon Forum" where we all just sit in our rockers and nod off from time to time and think we said something but really can't remember. :wtf: I've never seen it this dormant. I remember the days when Steve could post 10-15 new items in one setting followed by Eric and JK. Has everything been said? This keeps up and I will have to resort cruising the bar scene getting all my useful information from the graffiti writers in the mens rooms.  Am I the only one left? Has everyone gone over to Canon and forgotten to tell me? :-O |

Hello! Well my excuse is I have been building my car. Stick Welding, Esab 125 Amps 3.2mm Low Hydrogen Rod. Taken by Michael.  Crop, D200 18-105mm VR lens.  There have been plenty of browses judging from the members visiting each day. For some reason this forum does go quite in late summer. This year I think Olympic fatigue may be another explanation. |

Maybe it's something to do with the fact that a few years ago when we had the old site there was no economic downturn (aka screwing of the people in the extreme). I guess people have so many other worries in life these days, and to a large extent people tend to be neutered by the way of things these days, i.e. both public and private sector following the american corporate model, so folk get bummed around at every turn in life. I know when I get home from work I really can't be bothered with anything else. There's also the fact that in most people's places of work the middle managers are thugs & nasty little b*****ds, again specially selected as servants of the corporate model to bash those lower down into compliance. We have one...but what he doesn't know is pretty soon he will have gone too far and could find himself being dealt with the old English way.....i.e. dark alley bin liner & golf club....the way it used to be done in this country. In this global economy, which was an american trick designed to basically shift the worlds manufacturing to China....people are left too stressed out with just trying to survive and have little mental or emotional capacity left for anything else. I sometimes wonder if now that we've adopted the obesity culture from america, might we next move on to their suicide rates? As for me, well, currently dealing with HMRC, having to fill out forms to provide them with information which in the days of English law in England was their responsibility to ask me. Now of course like most other public and crown sector they are using american Oracle software, which assumes England is a US colony. So, when this is over there will be a new ruling for one tiny part of old England.......we don't do forms, we don't respond to CCTV attempts to incriminate us, we don't do 0845, we don't accept american software being used against us. We turn the clock back. You also have a situation nowadays where if you are involved with any hobby or activity you can't get your hands on material needed.....shops have all gone pathetically useless. Lord knows I can't get my hands on this that & the other ultimately for no other reason than US mossie bashing and support of Israel stealing land that doesn't belong to them. It's even very difficult to get hold of heavy metals or anything radioactive these days. Sissy state populated by fat over weight people who have about the same IQ as an amoeba. |

I think its two things. As Robert says, people are on vacation or relaxing after the physical exertion of the Olympics. I personally am exhausted after it...especially the rythmnic gymnastics.  But the other reason is a more serious consideration. We are victims of evolution. Thrown together with a common cause...to understand digital photography...there was initially a lot to discuss. But as Nikon have honed their product quality/consistency, we have bought to our budget and settled into our preferred way of doing things, the instances requiring help or discussion are now few and far between.  |

But as Nikon have honed their product quality/consistency.. .....well heres something to discuss; my eldest lad bought himself a nikon compact, from currys pc world of all places. Damn thing lasted 20 mins, then the display latched up. (was made in China) So I ask myself what exactly has Nikon honed it's products into? |

personally i have been glued to the olympics while it was on ,photography has also taken a backseat due to the weather and time of year in the wildlife stakes ,i have also been busy upgrading a caravan we recently bought that had been left to its own devices for 2 + years ,thats now ready to rock and roll so got a week away booked at start of sept ,might have some pics from that ,then back home for a couple of weeks and then off to poland for another jaunt (flying this time ) no doubt after returning from a couple of ryanair flights i will be better equipped to moan and groan than steven of oxford . managed a day out with the camera last week but nothing spectacular to report so thats about it .geriatric report finished :byebye::byebye: |

Well I have been busy with my villa rental and making sure the pool is cleaned and everything is ship shape. In reality for me what Eric says is the truism. We used to have lot more to discuss as the cameras were still evolving. I would say that the current state of evolution of the Nikon camera is very well advanced. If you look at some of the new base cameras D3200 this camera would knock spots off the old D1 in terms of MP, sophistication, rapid focusing, exposure accuracy with normal light and flash, etc. So I think that whilst some of us still feel we need or could learn a lot more about Photoshop the camera itself is largely sorted. OK there are always some tricks and tips and twiddles that we could all use and find out but they are only a 2% item. Over the last few years I have been thinking about my photography and my use of Photoshop and whether I feel the need to emulate the overblown and overPhotoshopped images I see in some/many amateur and semi-pro magazines. Interestingly when you look at the magazines that are targeted at the professional photographer there seems to be much less emphasis on this aspect except for making product shots look better. So my emphasis has been to explore other avenues of Photoshop to make sure that my presentation is improved and my content before Photoshopping is improved. Regarding the forum I was thinking that I would poll members on their enthusiasm to participate in a monthly project. No prizes, just a single or maybe three photos from each participating member which maybe voted on as best image of the month. But really it would be a chance to get out and take more photos an to display your images taken recently to fulfill a project brief that changed monthly. Any comments on this idea?. |

I think that's a great idea JK. My photographic skill is not at the same level as the rest of you folks but it would provide entertainment value for the crowd and give me some useful feed back. Looking forward to seeing vacation photos from the winners at JK's villa. |

I just haven't had much enthusiasm for the Hobby of late, too many other irons in the fire, or just plain being lazy, Olympics on TV, Motorcycles to ride, Amateur Radio to play, etc. Even the wife suggested a photography trip through the White Mountains, couldn't push me to action.. I am just finishing up a trip back to Detroit for my 52nd year High School reunion, and that wasn't really every enjoyable.. Too many really old people ????? :-( |

Not sure about the 'competition' idea. Different skill levels I feel would put a damper on the enthusiasm to keep 'entering'. Its one occasion where I feel competition persay would be counter productive. IMHO I would prefer just a 'topic for the month' approach, where we are invited to depict the topic. No prizes, no ranking - just a bit of discussion about people's intepretation of the subject. |

Also summer here is short so I'm out and about and finally taking my first real vacation with my wife (10 months of being married...We are driving the oregon coast and going to see the redwoods of california. FINALLY a trip where I can feel human and enjoy myself |

Like others things crop up and go in cycles which takes us away from snapping sometimes. Just pressed the shutter button for the first time in six months after three spells in hospital and a few complications along the way. Altogether I've not had much to say forum wise. Do find the new format a bit daunting. Almost too much choice when logging on compared to old front page and hard for me to spot new comments or threads. |

well my excuse for lack of photographic activity is as follows: 1) voluntary redundancy from public corrupt sector after 11 years. Paid off Mortgge. 2) Sold Mini Cooper. 3) Bought Mazda MX5. 4) Self employed for while. 5) Now back in the defence industry. 6) New hobby: watch collecting & repairs. Precious metals. Cruising around rubbing ex work people's faces in it. 7) MX 5 takes up most of my time and passion. |

Basically not many had cars back then, bikes was all we had and you needed mechanical knowledge or you didn't get to work on time. As for amateur radio, well I have rigs here... a TS520S and a TS 700G. Not licenced though I suppose I should get around to it one day. Spent some time with the Foreign Office in years gone by that's how I acquired skills & became morse proficient. |

Not been online a lot lately as I only have internet on my phone now so only check in when I'm in a web cafe with my laptop. And it's just too damned hot here to think about going out and taking photos. Am also heading back to the high seas for September. Maybe by then we'll all have wakened up a bit after the summer! Good idea for the monthly project. |

"Portable" lump, but all still work fine. Last year right after i got back on teh air I bought a new Kenwood TS 590s, everything has changed and the new rig can be run from the computer, all the logging is online and on the computer DX nets and spotting networks abound.. K1KXN is my current call the original from 1976 was WD8KXN.. Get on the air it's different and still fun.. |

Have thought many times about taking up Ham radio but don't like tests so have never gone further than buying a book once. The Morse requirement never bothered me as I was a High Speed radio operator in the Army. Just don't like tests and see little need for all the Govt requires for Ham Radio. If you could just apply and pay a fee it would be fun I imagine. When I was in the Army we were permitted to use our radios in off hours and communicated with many other operators in many remote places.Had a SSB CB that worked sometime on skip but was never reliable,but fun when it did. |

Slightly different nowadays in England, we no longer have stuffy tests. In fact it's never been easier. If the US is anything like what England used to be at one time, I'd guess it isn't the US government responsible for bullsht test criteria, but probably amateurs themselves lobbying for ridiculous criteria.....usually the old farts. We still have loads of old farts here involved in the activity, fortunately OFCOM banged 'em to right years ago and they no longer have influence. Our novice licence give us 10 Watts, but does allow HF too. Not that I know any novices who run 100W from a TS520 lol The only annoying restrictions we have are in transmission mode, if it's RTTY it' supposed to be standard baudot or packet so they know what you are up to. The government here likes to give GCHQ as much immunity as possible to poke it's nose in other people's business, and this will eventually extend to all UK internet traffic. ....not that I know anyone who transmits ENIGMA or FISH he he which annoys the crap out of the state eavesdroppers.....cannot be decrypted if you know what not to transmit. |
